Does my phone support eSIM?

Search your iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel and tell us where it was bought. China mainland, Hong Kong and Macao iPhones are the big exception, and the phone must be carrier-unlocked.

Three checks before you buy an eSIM

  • Dial *#06#. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, your phone has eSIM hardware (Monzo’s help page gives this check). On iPhone, the EID is also in Settings › General › About. On Pixel, it’s in Settings › About phone › SIM status.
  • Make sure it’s carrier-unlocked. On iPhone, Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock should read “No SIM restrictions” (Apple). On Android, ask the carrier that sold you the phone.
  • Know where it was bought. Apple: in China mainland only iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Duo, 17e and Air support eSIM. Many iPhones sold in Hong Kong and Macao use two nano-SIMs instead. Samsung: “depending on the country of origin, eSIM may not be supported even if your device is listed”. Monzo also notes that eSIM support on iPhones bought in Turkey depends on when the phone was first set up.
  • eSIM-only phones: Apple says iPhone Air and iPhone Duo have no SIM tray anywhere. iPhone 17 and 18 Pro models have no tray in the US, Canada, Japan and several Gulf countries, and iPhone 14 to 16 (and 16e) in the US. Google says US Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL can’t use a physical SIM. On these phones a travel eSIM is the simplest option.
  • China mainland carrier eSIMs can’t be used on a phone bought outside China mainland (Apple). This doesn’t affect travel eSIMs from Airalo, Saily or Yesim.

Then follow our step-by-step install guide, check sockets with the plug & voltage finder, and compare a day pass in the eSIM vs roaming comparator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know for sure my phone has eSIM?

Dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, the phone has eSIM hardware (this is the check UK carrier Monzo gives its customers). You can also look in Settings: on iPhone, Settings › General › About; on Pixel, Settings › About phone › SIM status; on other Android phones, Settings › About phone or Connections › SIM manager.

My phone supports eSIM — why won’t a travel eSIM install?

The usual reason is a carrier lock. A phone bought on contract or from a carrier may only accept that carrier’s SIMs. On iPhone, go to Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock: “No SIM restrictions” means it’s unlocked. On Android, ask your carrier. Install the travel eSIM before you fly while you still have Wi-Fi.

Do iPhones from China, Hong Kong or Macao support eSIM?

Mostly no. Apple says that in China mainland only iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Duo, 17e and Air support eSIM. Many Hong Kong and Macao models use two physical nano-SIMs instead. Search your model number (Settings › General › About, e.g. A3297) in the box above to see which version you have.

Can I keep my home number while using a travel eSIM?

Yes, on dual-SIM phones. Keep your home line for calls and SMS codes, and set the travel eSIM as the data line. See our install guide.

My brand isn’t listed. Does that mean no eSIM?

Not necessarily. We only list models from Apple, Samsung and Google’s own pages. For Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus and others, dial *#06# for an EID or check Settings › Network & internet › SIMs for a “Download a SIM” option (Motorola’s support page gives this path).
