Per-day breakdown
How we calculate
We estimate megabytes per hour for each activity, multiply by the hours you set per day, then by trip length and the number of devices. Hotel Wi‑Fi scales down the heavy activities (streaming, social, hotspot, long calls) rather than zeroing everything. We then add a 15% buffer for background apps, OS updates and days that run hotter than average, and round up to a common plan size: 1, 3, 5, 10 or 20 GB, or unlimited if the estimate is higher.
| Activity | Rate we use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maps & navigation | 8 MB / hour | Live navigation is light once map tiles cache; offline maps use almost none. |
| Messaging | 15 MB / hour | Text is tiny; this allows for photos and voice notes mixed in. |
| Social scrolling | 250 MB / hour | Mid-point of the ~100–300 MB/hr range for video-heavy feeds. |
| Video (SD) | 700 MB / hour | Aligned with Netflix’s published SD figure (~0.7 GB/hr). |
| Video (HD) | 2.5 GB / hour | Between common 1080p estimates and Netflix’s 3 GB/hr HD figure. |
| Video calls | 700 MB / hour | Typical mid-range for Zoom / Meet / FaceTime over cellular. |
| Music | 72 MB / hour | Spotify “Normal” quality (~96 kbps); High/Very High uses more. |
| Web & email | 60 MB / hour | Browsing, search and mail with some images. |
| Hotspot | 300 MB / hour | Planning mid-point for mixed laptop use — raise it for updates or HD calls. |
These are planning figures, not a measurement of your phone. Real use varies with video quality, signal and background sync. When in doubt, size up one tier — most providers let you top up.
Frequently asked questions
How much eSIM data do I need for a week in Japan?
For a typical week of maps, messaging, some social and light browsing, the calculator usually lands around 3–5 GB before you round up to a plan. Heavy streaming or hotspotting a laptop pushes you toward 10 GB or unlimited. Japan prices and networks are in our Japan eSIM guide.
Is 10 GB enough for travel?
For most travellers on a one- to two-week trip who use hotel or café Wi‑Fi for video, 10 GB is a comfortable default. It is tight if you stream HD video or hotspot a laptop for hours each day — run the calculator with a Heavy or Remote work preset to check.
How much data does hotspot / tethering use?
It depends on what the other device does. Light email and browsing might add a few hundred MB an hour; a video call or software update can burn through gigabytes. The calculator’s hotspot slider uses 300 MB per hour as a planning mid-point for mixed laptop use — turn it up if you expect heavy transfers.
How much data do TikTok and Instagram use?
Video-heavy feeds are the main variable. We plan social scrolling at about 250 MB per hour (midway in the 100–300 MB/hr range commonly cited for Instagram/TikTok-style feeds). An hour a day for a week is roughly 1.7 GB before the buffer.
Do unlimited eSIM plans have fair-use limits?
Often yes. Many “unlimited” travel eSIMs slow you down after a daily high-speed allowance, and hotspot rules vary. Always read the plan page. Our destination guides note what each provider publishes about fair use and hotspotting.
Does hotel Wi‑Fi really reduce how much eSIM data I need?
Yes, if you actually use it for the heavy stuff. Streaming, cloud backups, app updates and long video calls are the big savers. Maps and messaging still happen on the street, so the calculator only cuts the heavy activities when you tick hotel Wi‑Fi — it does not assume zero mobile use.
Should I buy one plan or one per traveller?
Most travel eSIMs are installed per phone. Set Devices / travellers to the number of phones that will each need their own plan, or hotspot from one phone if the plan allows it (and you accept the extra drain on that phone’s battery and allowance).
What do “Light”, “Typical”, “Heavy” and “Remote work” mean?
They are starting points for the sliders: Light is maps and messaging; Typical adds social and a little video; Heavy adds streaming; Remote work emphasises video calls and hotspot. Adjust any slider afterward — your URL updates so you can share the exact mix.
