South Africa at a glance
Checked 6 November 2026- Cheapest plan listed
- $3.961 GB / 30 days, Yesim (Saily sale: 1 GB / 7 days for $3.99)
- 7 days unlimited
- $19.99Maya’s global plan; Nomad’s South Africa unlimited starts at 5 days for $19
- 10 GB for 30 days
- $18Nomad (Saily sale $18.39; Airalo CellC $24.00)
- Networks named
- Vodacom, Cell C, MTN, Telkom (varies by provider)
These South Africa plans are data-only, with no local phone number. Keep your home SIM on for bank and app SMS codes.
Why South Africa is different
Networks differ by brand. Airalo’s unlimited packages list Vodacom; its data + calls + texts packages list RSA CellC. Holafly’s South Africa page lists Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom. Nomad, Saily, Yesim and Ubigi did not name a South Africa network on the pages we read.
Fixed data undercuts unlimited for light trips. Nomad listed 10 GB for 30 days at $18; Saily showed a sale price of $18.39 for the same size on 6 November 2026. Holafly’s 7-day unlimited is $39.50.
Safari and mountain days are the coverage test. Holafly’s own South Africa page notes weaker or less stable coverage in parts of Kruger, the Drakensberg, the Karoo and other rural inland routes — plan offline maps either way.
Glance note: the template labels these as data-only plans. Airalo also sells South Africa packages with calls and texts on CellC; Holafly’s South Africa eSIM is data-only per its FAQ.
Quick picks
A week or two, normal use
A 10 GB / 30-day plan: $18 at Nomad, or Saily’s sale price of $18.39. Airalo’s CellC 10 GB / 30 days is $24.00.
Heavy phone use
Maya’s global plan is $19.99 a week. Among South Africa plans, Nomad’s 5-day unlimited is $19; Airalo unlimited is $36.00 for 7 days; Holafly is $39.50.
Airalo CellC packages
Airalo lists data + calls + texts on RSA CellC alongside Vodacom unlimited data packages. Confirm minutes on the package page.
Holafly list
Holafly names Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom. Hotspot sharing is capped at 1 GB per day.
Step 1: Size your plan for South Africa
Maps, ride-hailing, transit apps and messaging use little data. Uploading photos and videos and making video calls use much more. As a rough guide, maps and messaging use hundreds of megabytes a day, while video and video calls can use several gigabytes. These are general estimates, not measurements.
Under a week, maps, messages and transport apps
3–5 GB fixed plan
1–2 weeks, photos, social apps and video
10–20 GB fixed, or unlimited
Remote work, video calls, tethering a laptop
Unlimited, after checking its fair-use and hotspot rules
Step 2: Compare published prices
Unlimited plans by trip length
| Days | Airalo | Nomad | Holafly | Ubigi | Yesim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 days | $19.00 (lowest listed) | — | $19.90 | — | — |
| 5 days | $28.00 | $19 (lowest listed) | $30.90 | — | — |
| 7 days | $36.00 | — | $39.50 | $35 | $30.00 (lowest listed) |
| 10 days | $45.00 | $37 (lowest listed) | $46.90 | — | — |
| 15 days | $51.00 | — | $63.50 | $49 | $46.80 (lowest listed) |
| 30 days | $99.00 | — | $111.90 | $79 | $64.80 (lowest listed) |
Lowest listed price in the row — means no plan of that length was listed. Yesim ($9.60) also sell a single day. Holafly allows 1 GB a day of hotspot sharing and lists Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom. Maya sells one global unlimited plan at the same price for every country: $9.99 for 3 days, $19.99 for 7, $27.99 for 14 and $49.99 for 30 (see Maya). Official pages, checked 6 November 2026.
Fixed-data plans
| Data | Airalo | Nomad | Saily | Ubigi | Yesim |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | $4.503 days | $47 days | $3.997 days | — | $3.9630 days (lowest listed) |
| 3 GB | $10.007 days | $830 days | $7.9930 days (lowest listed) | — | — |
| 5 GB | $13.5030 days | $1130 days | $10.3930 days (lowest listed) | — | — |
| 10 GB | $24.0030 days | $1830 days (lowest listed) | $18.3930 days | — | $24.0030 days |
| 20 GB | $40.0030 days | $2930 days (lowest listed) | $29.5930 days | — | $34.8030 days |
| 50 GB | $55.0030 days (lowest listed) | — | — | $5530 days (lowest listed) | — |
Lowest listed price in the row Validity differs, so compare the small print as well as the price. Where a provider sells the same data amount for several lengths, we show the longest. Airalo also lists shorter CellC packages (for example 10 GB for 7 days at $20.50). Ubigi fixed sizes other than 50 GB / 30 days were incomplete in our capture, so they are omitted. Saily unlimited day length was not clearly shown beside the sale price. Official pages, checked 6 November 2026.
Step 3: Check the fine print
- Networks. Airalo: Vodacom (unlimited) / RSA CellC (data+calls). Holafly: Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom. Nomad, Saily, Yesim and Ubigi didn’t name one on the pages we read.
- Unlimited isn’t always unlimited. Ubigi says a fair-use policy may apply. Holafly’s South Africa page limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day (a 7-day plan includes 7 GB to share).
- Activation windows. Nomad starts a plan automatically 60 days after purchase if you haven’t used it. Saily says all plans have a 180-day activation period; after that the plan starts automatically. Ubigi’s plan starts when you arrive.
- Hotspot. Yesim says hotspot depends on the operator, and gives 180 days from purchase to activate.
- Saily sale prices. On 6 November 2026 Saily showed reduced South Africa prices (for example 10 GB for 30 days at $18.39). Offers end, so check the price at checkout.
- No local number. These plans are data-only. Saily sells an optional US phone number, and Yesim offers a 20-minute calling add-on.

Taken from each provider's official plan or FAQ pages we already cite on this guide, checked 6 November 2026. 'Check provider' means we did not find a clear statement on the pages we read — confirm on the provider's site before you buy. We have not tested hotspot or coverage ourselves.

What stands out
Unlimited packages on Vodacom from 3 to 30 days, plus a separate CellC ladder with data, calls and texts (for example 10 GB / 30 days at $24.00).
What to watch
Unlimited is expensive here against Maya’s global plan ($19.99 a week vs Airalo’s $36.00 for 7 days). Read fair-use on the package you buy.

- South Africa from
- $19.903 days unlimited
- Unlimited
- $39.507 days; $111.90 for 30 days

What stands out
Unlimited by the day from $19.90 for 3 days. The South Africa page lists Cell C, MTN, Telkom and Vodacom, with hotspot sharing up to 1 GB a day.
What to watch
Higher than Maya’s global plan at every common length we compared, and FUP may reduce speed for up to one day.
Saily
- South Africa from
- $3.991 GB / 7 days
- 10 GB / 30 days
- $18.39
- Unlimited
- Listed from about $47.99 on sale; confirm day length at checkout
What stands out
On sale when we checked: 10 GB for $18.39, with 180 days to activate. From Nord Security.
What to watch
Unlimited was listed around $47.99 on sale — confirm the day length at checkout. No network named on the page we read.
Ubigi

What to watch
Other fixed sizes were incomplete in our 6 November 2026 capture, so we omit unverified rows. Ubigi says a fair-use policy may apply.
Yesim
- South Africa from
- $3.961 GB / 30 days
- 10 GB / 30 days
- $24.00
- Unlimited
- $30.007 days; $64.80 for 30
What stands out
Cheapest small fixed plan here: 1 GB for 30 days at $3.96. 10 GB is $24.00.
What to watch
No network named, and Yesim says hotspot depends on the operator.
Maya
- 3 days
- $9.99unlimited data
- 7 days
- $19.99unlimited data
- 30 days
- $49.99unlimited data
What stands out
Often the cheapest unlimited week ($19.99) when country unlimited plans are $30+. It’s one global plan, so the same eSIM keeps working if South Africa is one stop of several. Maya’s page says "No caps, no throttling."
What to watch
It renews automatically while Travel Mode is on, so turn it off when you get home. The page we read doesn’t name the local networks or spell out a fair-use policy, and we haven’t tested the no-throttling claim.
Will your phone work?
- eSIM-capable and unlocked. Apple lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR or later. Settings → General → About should say "No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock (full checklist).
- Bought in mainland China? Apple says that in China mainland only the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM. Many older mainland models use two physical SIM cards instead, so check for Add eSIM in your settings before you buy a plan.
- Bought in Hong Kong or Macau? Apple notes that certain iPhone models sold there have two nano-SIM slots. Check for Add eSIM in your settings first.
- Install before you fly. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off until you land (install guide).
Coverage: metros vs parks
Metro areas (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Pretoria) are where travel eSIMs usually behave best. Nature reserves, mountain passes and long inland roads are where Holafly’s own page warns about weaker coverage. Download offline maps for Kruger, the Drakensberg and Garden Route drives regardless of which eSIM you buy.
Networks
We do not publish speed tests. Network names above come from provider pages checked on 6 November 2026; actual partner routing can change.
Entry notes
- Passport and visa. Check GOV.UK (or your government’s) South Africa entry page for your nationality before you fly.
- Yellow fever. Some itineraries need a yellow-fever certificate if you arrive from a risk country — confirm on the official advice page.
- Offline backups. Save boarding passes, lodge confirmations and offline maps before safari days.
Our take
For most trips, a 10 GB / 30-day fixed plan from Nomad ($18) or Saily (sale $18.39 when checked) is the value pick. Need calls? Look at Airalo’s CellC packages. Hate counting GB? Compare Maya’s global unlimited with Holafly’s day plans after reading the 1 GB/day hotspot cap.
