Unlimited travel eSIM and fair use (2026): what the fine print actually says

Unlimited sounds simple until the plan page mentions a Fair Usage Policy, a daily high-speed allowance, or a 1 GB hotspot cap. This guide shows the four numbers to read before you buy, how major providers describe unlimited on the pages we checked, and when Signal Atlas usually recommends a fixed plan instead.

No invented tests

We do not invent speed tests. If a provider does not publish a numeric after-cap speed, we say so rather than guessing.

Unlimited vs fixed-data: a simple cost logic

Use our data calculator or how much data guide to estimate a week of maps and messaging versus a week of hotspot meetings.

  • Light week (maps + chat, hotel Wi-Fi at night): a 3–5 GB fixed plan is often enough and cheaper than seven unlimited days.
  • Heavy phone video, no Wi-Fi: unlimited can be simpler — if you accept the four numbers above.
  • Daily laptop hotspot: prefer a large fixed plan, or confirm the hotspot cap will not strand you after 1 GB.

For destination examples, see Japan and Europe. The Airalo vs Holafly page shows how fixed vs day-pricing compares on sample routes.

Hotspot and “unlimited”

Hotspot rules are easy to miss because they sit below the marketing headline. Holafly’s destination FAQs repeatedly state 1 GB of shareable hotspot data per day. Nomad advertises hotspot support on many plans but still applies the unlimited high-speed → 1 Mbps rule. Always read the plan you are buying — not a screenshot from a different country.

When Signal Atlas usually recommends fixed plans

Maps and messaging

Fixed 3–10 GB

Cheaper than a week of unlimited on most destinations we cover.

Daily laptop tether

Large fixed plan

Avoid 1 GB/day hotspot caps unless that is truly enough.

Hate counting GB

Unlimited — after the four numbers

Holafly or an Airalo unlimited-day package, once you accept FUP and hotspot rules.

First install timing

Install before, activate on landing

Do not confuse installing the eSIM profile with starting the validity clock.

Frequently asked questions

What does unlimited eSIM fair use mean?

It means the provider or local network may limit speed or hotspot sharing even when the plan is sold as unlimited. On Holafly destination pages checked 6 November 2026, hotspot sharing is 1 GB/day and a FUP may reduce speed for up to one day.

Is Holafly unlimited really unlimited?

Holafly sells unlimited-by-the-day data. Read the hotspot and Fair Usage Policy lines on the destination page before you buy.

Unlimited or fixed data — which is cheaper?

For light use, fixed GB is usually cheaper. For heavy phone video without Wi-Fi, unlimited can be simpler if you accept the four numbers on this page.

Does Nomad unlimited slow down?

On the Nomad unlimited rules we restate across destination guides, speed drops to 1 Mbps after the daily high-speed allowance. Confirm on the Nomad plan page for your destination.
